Job Description:
A prominent player in the property and casualty insurance market is seeking an Assistant Vice President (AVP) of Construction Liability. The commercial casualty division, representing $1.5 billion in written premium, is actively in pursuit of a distinguished product and underwriting leader to undertake this pivotal role. The chosen candidate will shoulder the responsibility of spearheading the general liability, professional liability and umbrella lines associated with the construction industry across commercial lines, representing $550 million in written premium. This influential leader is sought for their technical expertise and will be tasked to develop and execute a comprehensive line of business strategy, business plans, product development and filing strategies, and underwriting guidelines tailored to propel growth within one of the organization’s most substantial business segments. The AVP will not only oversee general liability and umbrella for the construction industry, but will also actively discern areas for enhancement in profitability and growth. This collaborative leader will engage across the organization, interfacing with senior leadership, underwriting, sales, product teams and various departments to ensure the seamless delivery of profitable underwriting results. Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for the development and execution of the general liability, professional liability and umbrella strategic plan, as well as the profitability for the construction book of business.
  • Collaborate with the claims, commercial filings and legal teams to craft market-leading products by refining policy language, composing manuscripts, and evaluating competitor forms and filings in alignment with the overarching strategy for the construction business.
  • Provide expert counsel and support as needed to various stakeholders to ensure the efficacy of product development, filing strategy and ongoing product maintenance.
  • Offer advanced technical underwriting guidance to the underwriting and field sales teams by addressing intricate inquiries and consultations related to contractor liability.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert to formulate and present technical underwriting presentations and training content for internal staff.
  • Lead and deliver training via on-site or virtual modules to external customers.

Requirements:
  • 10+ years of related experience in property and casualty insurance with expertise in commercial casualty lines of business
  • Experience in the large construction casualty space (preferred)
  • Deep knowledge and familiarity with competitor and ISO offerings with expert knowledge of general liability policy language, including common endorsements with exclusions to the contracting industry
  • Subject matter expert in all areas of contractor liability, including contractual risk transfer, construction defect, wrap-ups, joint ventures and state-specific issues (preferred)
  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent; CPCU or other insurance professional designations (preferred)
