Job Description:
Our client, a property and casualty insurer specializing in the multifamily housing market, is seeking a Commercial Underwriter to join their mission-driven team. This role is responsible for managing the production, retention, and profitability of a commercial lines book of business, evaluating new and renewal submissions, determining risk acceptability, and setting pricing strategies. The ideal candidate will bring strong analytical and relationship management skills, working closely with appointed agents to support business growth and deliver exceptional service. Responsibilities:

  • Manage an assigned book of business, ensuring profitable growth.

  • Underwrite new and renewal commercial lines submissions in accordance with company guidelines.

  • Evaluate exposures, pricing adequacy, terms, and overall acceptability of risk.

  • Maintain thorough documentation to support underwriting decisions and audit standards.

  • Communicate underwriting outcomes and requirements to agents; negotiate terms to support profitable results.

  • Deliver quotes and manage the renewal process from start to finish.

  • Order and review property inspections and provide recommendations where necessary.

  • Develop and maintain strong internal and external relationships; travel to agencies and accounts as needed.

  • Monitor industry trends, territory dynamics, and regulatory developments and share insights with the team.

  • Assist with mentoring new underwriters and participate in internal training, meetings, or projects as requested.

  • Utilize company systems, tools, and software efficiently.

  • Support operational tasks, which may include occasional on-site risk reviews or loss reporting support.


Requirements:

  • Minimum of 3 years of commercial P&C underwriting experience, OR demonstrated success in a prior underwriting role.

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.

  • Professional designations such as CPCU, CIC, or AU preferred, or willingness to pursue one.

  • Strong negotiation, communication, and relationship-management skills.

  • Ability to analyze complex information and make sound underwriting decisions.

  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and service-focused.

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel within assigned territory.


Pay Range:
The anticipated salary for this position is $85k - $95k annually.

The final pay for this position is determined based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant experience, skills and certifications, education and training, geographic location, market conditions, and internal equity.
