Job Description:
This role is responsible for leading and overseeing underwriting, risk assessment and analysis functions for health and welfare benefits within a multi-employer trust.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure integrity of underwriting activities and processes.
- Identify, develop and implement opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Research, design, develop, test and implement underwriting, reporting and plan documentation processes and procedures as necessary. Coordinate with actuaries, finance and various vendors.
- Lead, manage and develop the performance of professional and support staff overseeing the financial elements of the health solutions services, including:
- Assessing risk and liability.
- Calculating and negotiating rates on basic to complex cases.
- Analyze industry data, demographics, enrollment, claims history and plan designs for prospects and renewals.
- Evaluate vendor and program changes.
- Support strategic initiatives with multi-employer trusts and church plan benefits and clients through data analysis, reporting, evaluation and presentations, providing insights and recommendations to meet organization and trust goals.
- Lead and oversee ad hoc reporting and risk assessment to support business needs, correct reporting errors, validate data integrity and establish necessary reporting capabilities.
- Perform other related duties, including special projects, as necessary. The content of projects may vary.
Requirements:
- 15+ years of experience in actuarial, underwriting and risk assessment for medical, dental, vision, life, LTD and other benefits
- Comprehensive knowledge and a proven track record managing group health insurance products, pricing methodologies, plan designs, product alternatives and strategies
- Must be able to maintain a high degree of accuracy and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Bachelor’s degree required, with a major in math, actuarial science, finance or business (preferred)
- Professional designations such as ASA, FSA and/or CPCU (preferred)
- Advanced critical thinking skills and expert knowledge of underwriting principles, risk assessment, pricing methodologies and strategies.
- Ability to evaluate complex data and multiple data sources to guide underwriting decisions
- Experience managing and developing underwriting teams and implementing strategic initiatives.
- Strong leadership skills, including coaching, development and team building
- Consultative and persuasive communication skills with ability to collaborate with brokers, actuaries, sales teams, account management and senior leadership
- Critical thinking to balance risk and profitability while maintaining compliance in a fast-paced environment
- Advanced Microsoft Office and Excel skills
