Underwriting Officer

Job Description:
A mutual commercial property and casualty insurance company is looking to add an Underwriting Officer to their team. This professional will be responsible for the overall corporate underwriting department by producing quality oversight of strategy development, strategy execution and business unit performance. This role is on-site in Maryland.
Responsibilities:
- Assess current and future needs of underwriting support in areas of staffing, workflow and automation.
- Ensure compliance with insurance laws and regulations, as well as establish and enforce service guidelines.
- Work effectively with other department heads to ensure achievement of corporate strategic objectives.
- Participate in the corporate strategic planning process and drive strategic planning for the underwriting department in cooperation with the underwriting leadership team.
- Responsible for underwriting quality assurance.
- Complete business unit audits to ensure compliance with file documentation standards, as well as overall underwriting quality standards and practices.
- Analyze underwriting experience and take appropriate action to achieve loss ratio objectives.
- Establish and enforce underwriting standards and policies consistent with corporate strategies.
- Develop performance objectives and identify the training needs of the underwriting support staff, as well as conduct performance reviews.
- Provide general staff development through coaching, mentoring and training with a focus on developing strong technical underwriting skills.
- Review and ensure compliance with reinsurance contracts pertaining to underwriting operation.
- Guide the product development process for new forms and coverages.
- Oversee the delivery of excellent customer service through the loss control and premium audit functions.
- Expand service capabilities to help insureds reduce their loss exposures.
- Establish and manage budget projections for the underwriting support departments.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree; MBA degree (preferred)
- 15+ years of commercial property and casualty underwriting experience
- Previous managerial experience
- Ability to travel periodically to regional offices
- Completion of the Associate in Commercial Underwriting (AU) or the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) program
