Investment Accountant

Job Description:
The Investment Accountant is responsible for the accounting, reporting, and analysis of the company’s investment portfolio in compliance with statutory accounting principles (SAP) and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). This role leads investment accounting operations, ensures regulatory compliance, and supports financial reporting to uphold the organization’s fiduciary responsibilities to policyholders and regulatory authorities.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and review statutory financial statements in accordance with NAIC guidelines, including schedules D, B and BA, and related investment reporting.
  • Prepare GAAP financial statements for investments, including monthly, quarterly and annual reports with supporting documentation, analysis and disclosures for securities, bonds, mortgages and alternative investments.
  • Ensure compliance with state insurance regulations and NAIC statutory accounting principles for investment accounting, including proper classification, valuation and reporting of admitted and non-admitted assets.
  • Prepare responses to external auditor, DIFS and IRS inquiries.
  • Prepare detailed investment-related footnote disclosures.
  • Provide effective and efficient solutions to complex business problems.
  • Coordinate with external auditors and state insurance regulators on investment-related inquiries, examinations and filings.
  • Utilize Clearwater Analytics for daily investment portfolio aggregation, reconciliation, performance reporting, and compliance monitoring across multiple asset classes and accounting bases.
  • Use financial software for investment research, modeling, peer analysis, and due diligence on potential and existing portfolio holdings.
  • Oversee calculation and reporting of asset valuation reserve and Interest Maintenance Reserve in accordance with NAIC requirements.
  • Collaborate with the investment management team to ensure proper documentation of investment transactions, fair value measurements and credit loss assessments under the CECL model.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field
  • 3+ years of accounting experience, including at least 1 year in investment accounting (preferably within life insurance)
  • Experience with life insurance SAP and NAIC annual statement preparation (preferred)
  • Experience with Clearwater Analytics SaaS platform (preferred)
  • Ability to work independently and proactively resolve issues
  • Strong analytical, organizational, planning and communication skills
  • Effective team collaboration and cross-functional leadership capabilities
  • Proficiency in current PC software, accounting applications and investment accounting principles
  • CPA, CFA or other relevant professional certifications (preferred)
  • Thorough understanding of SAP and GAAP as they apply to life insurance company investments
  • Advanced Excel skills and experience with accounting systems, investment management systems and data analytics tools
  • Knowledge of insurance regulatory requirements, risk-based capital calculations and solvency monitoring
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving and project management skills
  • Understanding of fair value accounting, credit risk assessment and asset-liability management principles
  • Experience with S&P Capital IQ Pro or similar financial analysis tools (preferred)
  • Enthusiasm for staying current with evolving accounting standards and regulatory requirements specific to the life insurance industry, including NAIC developments and FASB pronouncements
  • Ability to handle confidential financial information and adhere to strict confidentiality standards


Pay Range:
The anticipated pay range for this position is $60,000 – $90,000 annually.
