Remote Investment Accountant

Job Description:
This role will be responsible for the full accounting, reporting and analysis of the company’s investment portfolio under both Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP) and U.S. GAAP, ensuring accurate financial results across multiple asset classes. The individual will lead day-to-day investment accounting operations, oversee NAIC and state regulatory reporting, and maintain strong controls around classification, valuation and disclosure. Partnering closely with investment management and external auditors, this role helps safeguard the organization’s financial strength and fiduciary obligations to policyholders and regulators.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform timely review and reconciliation of custodial feed activity in the investment management system, including preparation and posting of monthly transactions into the finance system.
  • Prepare and review statutory financial statements in accordance with NAIC guidelines, including Schedule D (investment schedules), Schedule B (mortgages), Schedule BA (other long-term invested assets) and all related investment reporting.
  • Prepare GAAP financial statements for investments—monthly, quarterly and annually—with supporting documentation, analysis and footnote disclosures for securities, bonds, mortgages and alternative investments.
  • Ensure compliance with state insurance regulations and NAIC SAP through proper classification, valuation and reporting of admitted and non-admitted assets.
  • Respond to inquiries from external auditors, Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) and the IRS, and prepare all required investment footnote disclosures.
  • Provide effective and efficient solutions to complex business issues.
  • Coordinate with external auditors and state insurance regulators on investment-related inquiries, examinations and regulatory filings, including responses to DIFS requests.
  • Utilize Clearwater Analytics for daily investment portfolio data aggregation, reconciliation, performance reporting, and compliance monitoring across multiple asset classes and accounting bases.
  • Leverage software tools for investment research, financial modeling, peer analysis, and due diligence on potential investments and existing portfolio holdings.
  • Oversee the calculation and reporting of the Asset Valuation Reserve (AVR) and Interest Maintenance Reserve (IMR) in accordance with NAIC requirements for life insurance companies.
  • Collaborate with the investment management team to ensure proper documentation of investment transactions, fair value measurements and credit loss assessments under the CECL model.


Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field
  • 3+ years of accounting experience, including 1+ years in investment accounting; life insurance industry experience (preferred)
  • Experience with life insurance SAP and NAIC Annual Statement preparation (preferred)
  • Experience with the Clearwater Analytics platform— including automated investment accounting, performance reporting, data aggregation, reconciliation, and compliance (strongly preferred)
  • CPA, CFA or other relevant professional certifications preferred
  • Experience with the S&P Capital IQ Pro platform for financial analysis, market intelligence, investment research, company screening and portfolio analytics (preferred)
  • Commitment to staying current with rapidly evolving accounting standards and regulatory requirements specific to the life insurance industry, including NAIC developments, FASB pronouncements and state insurance regulations
  • May involve access to confidential financial information and requires adherence to strict confidentiality standards


Pay Range:
The anticipated pay range for this position is $33-$37 per hour, based on experience. We understand salary is an important factor in a job search, and we encourage you to apply even if you feel that your desired compensation may fall outside of the listed range. The final pay for this position is determined based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant experience, skills and certifications, education and training, geographic location, market conditions, and internal equity.
