Job Description:

Life Underwriting Consultant contractors are needed to support life insurance new business processing by evaluating individual applications in accordance with established underwriting guidelines and risk classification standards. This remote engagement will help bridge underwriting volume while an accelerated underwriting model is implemented and scheduled to go live in approximately six months. The consultant will operate independently, document decisions clearly, and support service-level objectives while working within delegated authority limits.

Responsibilities:

• Review and assess individual life insurance applications for completeness and risk acceptability.

• Evaluate medical, financial, and non-medical risk factors using approved underwriting manuals and rules.

• Classify risks and render underwriting decisions within authorized delegated limits.

• Document underwriting rationale clearly and consistently in underwriting systems.

• Identify requirements needed to reach underwriting decisions.

• Adhere to defined turnaround times and underwriting service-level agreements.

• Escalate cases exceeding delegated authority per established protocols.

• Comply with regulatory, compliance, and data security requirements.

Requirements:

• Minimum 5+ years of individual life insurance underwriting experience (targeting 10)

• Demonstrated experience underwriting medically underwritten life insurance products

• Strong working knowledge of medical impairments, mortality risk, and financial underwriting

• Strong ability to review and interpret medical records

• Ability to apply underwriting guidelines consistently and defensibly

• Experience working in electronic underwriting and policy administration systems

• Ability to handle complex medical histories including PTSD, chronic pain, and substance abuse, common in the military market, independently

• Experience underwriting Whole Life and Term policies

• Extensive experience reading and working with complicated medical records

• Experience rating up to 250-300 debits, not just up to table four

• Target $3 million, with a minimum of $2 million

• Cannot live in California, New York, Illinois, or Washington

Pay Range:

The anticipated pay range for this position is $40.00 - $50.00 per hour. The final pay for this position is determined based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant experience, skills and certifications, education and training, geographic location, market conditions, and internal equity.
