Product Subject Matter Expert Actuary

Work at Home, | Temp

Job Description:
Our client is seeking a Product Subject Matter Expert Actuary (SME Actuary) to support the successful conversion of life insurance products from a legacy policy administration system to a new policy administration platform. The SME Actuary will provide deep actuarial and product expertise to ensure product rules, calculations and historical behaviors are accurately understood, documented, tested and validated. The goal is to ensure policies perform correctly following conversion. This role focuses on standard life insurance and annuity products (term life, universal life, whole life and basic annuities), including specialized universal life features such as guideline premium testing under IRC Sections 7702 and 7702A, as well as CVAT product premium testing.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary subject matter expert for assigned life insurance products, including riders.

  • Interpret and document product rules across the policy lifecycle: premiums, benefits, charges, interest crediting, lapse behavior, nonforfeiture options and rider interactions.

  • Analyze legacy system outputs and historical data to identify undocumented rules, inconsistencies or exceptions.

  • Translate product rules and historical behaviors into clear, testable business requirements for system configuration and data conversion.

  • Review and validate conversion mappings, assumptions, and transformation logic for accuracy.

  • Collaborate with actuarial, accounting, and operations teams to resolve product-related questions and cross-functional impacts.

  • Define and review test scenarios, including standard, boundary, and exception cases.

  • Validate outputs between legacy systems and the new policy administration system.

  • Identify discrepancies, recommend corrective actions and provide formal sign-off on product readiness for conversion phases.

  • Proactively identify product risks, data gaps and dependencies affecting conversion accuracy or policyholder outcomes.

  • Support defect triage by assessing business impact and prioritization.

  • Escalate unresolved issues with clear documentation and actionable recommendations.

  • Maintain thorough documentation of product rules, assumptions and decisions.

  • Support training and knowledge transfer to post-conversion operational teams.

  • Assist with post-conversion stabilization and issue resolution as needed.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, finance, business or related field (or equivalent experience)

  • ASA designation

  • 7+ years of experience in life insurance product, actuarial, policy administration or insurance operations roles

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience working with life insurance products across the policy lifecycle (issue, billing, in-force administration, changes, lapses, nonforfeiture, claims or conversions)

  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply complex life insurance product rules and calculations

  • Expertise in compliance with IRC Sections 7702 and 7702A, including Necessary Premium Testing

  • Proven ability to analyze policy administration system outputs, identify discrepancies and explain root causes

  • Experience supporting system implementations, conversions or major platform changes in an insurance environment

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to document decisions clearly and explain complex concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders
