Director, CL Excess and Surplus Lines

Job Description:
Under limited supervision and with significant independent judgment, this role is responsible for overseeing the strategic development, underwriting and management of the company’s excess and surplus (E&S) lines portfolio. This leadership position drives profitable growth, manages risk, develops strong broker relationships and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements. The Director leads a team of underwriters and collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to deliver innovative insurance solutions for non-standard and high-risk accounts.


Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement strategic plans to grow the E&S lines portfolio while maintaining profitability.

  • Identify emerging trends, risks and opportunities to position the company as a leader in the E&S market.

  • Monitor portfolio performance (loss ratios, premium growth, market penetration) and adjust strategies as needed.

  • Establish and maintain underwriting guidelines, appetite and authority levels.

  • Underwrite complex or high-severity accounts as needed, setting standards for quality and consistency.

  • Oversee underwriting reviews and portfolio analytics to identify trends and ensure balanced growth.

  • Partner with actuarial and reinsurance teams to support pricing and capacity decisions.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with wholesale brokers, MGAs and specialty partners.

  • Act as a visible market representative, promoting E&S capabilities and underwriting culture.

  • Collaborate with marketing and business development to strengthen brand recognition and distribution engagement.

  • Lead, coach and develop underwriting teams, often through subordinate leaders.

  • Communicate vision and execute strategic and operational plans.

  • Manage team performance, including goal setting, evaluations and development.

  • Oversee employment decisions including hiring, promotions, compensation and corrective actions.

  • Serve as a member of the management team representing commercial lines and profit center functions.

  • Contribute to strategic and operational planning, including product development and commission structures.

  • Participate in corporate planning initiatives and tactical projects as a business or technical sponsor.


Requirements:

  • Proven leadership experience E&S underwriting and portfolio management

  • Strong background in underwriting complex and high-risk accounts

  • Demonstrated ability to build and manage broker, MGA and partner relationships

  • Experience driving profitable growth and managing portfolio performance metrics

  • Ability to develop and execute strategic and operational plans

  • Strong leadership, coaching and team development skills

  • Experience collaborating with actuarial, reinsurance and cross-functional teams
