Job Description:

The Vice President of Underwriting, Commercial Auto provides executive leadership for commercial trucking and transportation insurance programs. This role is responsible for driving underwriting strategy, advancing product development and delivering profitable portfolio growth. The position requires deep expertise in trucking insurance and the ability to collaborate internally and externally to build best-in-class underwriting capabilities.

Responsibilities

• Lead and oversee commercial trucking underwriting operations and strategic direction.

• Develop and implement underwriting strategies to achieve profitable growth across fleet and non-fleet programs.

• Direct product development initiatives, including expansion into new states, market segments and innovative trucking solutions.

• Manage portfolio performance, including rate adequacy, loss ratio improvement and underwriting governance.

• Build and maintain strong carrier and reinsurance partner relationships.

• Partner cross-functionally with claims, actuarial, operations and technology teams to enhance underwriting quality and operational efficiency.

• Establish underwriting guidelines, pricing discipline and risk selection standards.

• Support modernization efforts through technology, data analytics and process improvements.

• Mentor and develop high-performing underwriting teams.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience in commercial trucking insurance, with strong automobile liability expertise; experience in physical damage and cargo (preferred)

• Background in underwriting, product management or program leadership within transportation insurance

• Senior leadership experience (VP, AVP or Head of Underwriting/Product) with P&L or portfolio ownership responsibility

• Demonstrated expertise in fleet and non-fleet trucking underwriting, pricing and risk selection

• Experience building or scaling commercial trucking insurance programs across multiple states

• Strong carrier and reinsurance relationship management experience

• Experience with specialty carriers, MGAs, program administrators or transportation-focused insurers (preferred)

• Proven success launching new trucking products, including telematics/usage-based insurance or niche transportation segments

• Track record of improving loss ratios, rate adequacy and underwriting controls

• Ability to collaborate with technology and operations teams to modernize underwriting processes

• Bachelor’s degree (preferred)

• CPCU designation (preferred)
